Non-European migrants who wish to work and reside in the UK are eligible for one of the UK Work Visa categories. Since 2008, the majority of the work-based categories have been part of the UK’s Points-Based System (PBS) for immigration. Each system type has its own purpose, criteria, and requirements. The PBS was created to assist the United Kingdom in better managing its migration plan and attracting the most competent workers.
The Work Visa categories are further subdivided as follows:
This category is for extraordinarily outstanding candidates and highly qualified people who want to come to the UK and live without a job offer or sponsorship. In the United Kingdom, high-value migrants include innovators, entrepreneurs, investors, highly skilled professionals, and post-graduates. Global Talent Visa, Innovator Visa, Entrepreneur Visa, and Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) are some of the categories that come under this.
Candidates who have a competent job offer in the UK, such as physicians, engineers, management consultants, social workers, accountants, and so on. These candidates’ prospective employers should be willing to sponsor them. This category includes categories such as Skilled Worker Visa (replacing Tier 2 General), Tier 2 (Minister of Religion), Tier 2 (Sportsperson), and Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer).
This visa category is intended to allow temporary workers to enter the United Kingdom for short-term or temporary work. Temporary workers include those in the creative and sporting industries, as well as those in charity, religion, government-approved exchange, and international agreements.
Applicants may also come to the UK to work as a domestic worker, as the sole representative of an overseas firm (only extension), or as a representative of an overseas newspaper, news agency, or broadcasting organisation, or on a BNO visa, Ancestry visa, High Potential Individual visa, or Youth Mobility Scheme visa route. These are not point-based categories.
